A medical prosthesis for use within the body which is formed of radiation treated ultra high molecular weight polyethylene having substantially no detectable free radicals, is described. Preferres prostheses exhibit reduced production of particles from the prosthesis during wear of the prosthesis, and are substantially oxidation resistant. Methods of manufacture of such devices and material used therein are also provided.

On décrit une prothèse médicale destinée à être implantée dans le corps, formée d'un polyéthylène à poids moléculaire très élevé et traité par rayonnement, et ne présentant pratiquement pas de radiaux libres détectables. Des prothèses préférées présentent une production réduite de particules à partir de la prothèse, lors de l'usure de celle-ci, et elles sont sensiblement résistantes à l'oxydation. On décrit également des procédés de fabrication de tels dispositifs, ainsi que le matériau utilisé pour leur fabrication.
