An method for identifying a sentinel lymph node associated, for example, with melanomas or breast tumor wherein a radiopharmaceutical is injected at the side of the neoplastic tissue and is permitted to migrate along alymph duct to collect at a sentinel node. The method involves locating a peak rate of photon emissions by providing a photon emissions probe with a detector, the probe being capable of receiving varying rates of emissions and providing output signals. A control system receives the output signals and forms an output representative of a photon count rate above a threshold value derived in conjunction with a base value and is actuable to increase the threshold count value. The photon emission rate of a first location having a radiopharmaceutical is measured. A second location is also measured and a determination is made between which location has an emissions rate sufficient to actuate the control system to elevate thresholds.
