ABSTRACT Radiation curable coatings, and prepolymers for realizing the coatings. The coatings are useful for providing films, inks, and varnishes and can be applied to substrates where resistance to abrasion and solvents is desired. The coatings can also be adapted to provide desired release characteristics. The prepolymers illustratively are liquid reaction products of polyamine containing polyamids with unsaturated polybasic carboxylic acids, esters, or anhydrides and the reaction products of polyether alcohols with isocyanates, as modified by unsaturated monomers. The polymerizable liquid preferably includes acrylate monomers with or without unsaturated and copolymerizable pre- polymers. In order to provide a radiation curable coating with desired release characteristics, various forms of waxy material are included. The wax has limited compatability with the prepolymers, and a thin layer migrates to a surface to provide, after cure, the desired release property. The thin surface layer also tends to exclude oxygen and permit curing in air. The coatings can include a dispersed polymer for shrink control and reinforcement.
