Radiation-curable oligomer-based compositions for forming an abrasion-resistant coating on a substrate are formulated from a Michael adduct and colloidal silica. The Michael adduct includes a multifunctional acrylate oligomer and an aminoalkoxysilane. The multifunctional acrylate oligomer is present in at least a two-to-one, and preferably a ten-to-one, Michael adduct equivalency. The cured coating compositions of the invention are adherent to numerous substrates and exhibit excellent adhesion, stain and abrasion resistance. The coating compositions of the invention have the advantage of relatively low silica solids loading and can avoid the use of toxic, low molecular weight multifunctional acrylate monomers.
