A solid aqueous electrolyte for use in an electrochemical device. The device is produced by a process comprising the steps of forming a homogeneous mixture of an ionically conductive material, water and a radiation curable material. The radiation curable material is capable of crosslinking upon exposure to radiation or heat. The mixture is subjected to ionizing radiation or heat to crosslink the curable material. An electrochemical cell including the electrolyte is also disclosed.
