A radiation delivery system scans radiation across a surface to be treated. The scanner incorporates an input optical fiber, one end of which enters the scanning mechanism. The fiber is configured to match the output beam characteristics of a laser source, to which the remote end of the fiber is connected. The scanner includes an optical system to relay an image of the input fiber core onto an external surface to effect a surface treatment. The housing of the scanner incorporates features to ensure correct location of the core image relative to the external surface and may also incorporate a protective window to prevent ingress of material released or generated during the surface treatment process. The end of the fiber inside the scanner is stripped of all external protective sheathing, leaving only the core of the fiber with its immediate cladding layer. A mechanism is provided to effect lateral displacement of the fiber core along two orthogonal axes relative to the axis of the core imaging system. The corresponding displacement of the image of the fiber core provides the required scanning function over the external surface.
