An instrument for detecting radiation is provided, which comprises an inner core housing a neutron detector, and an outer core comprising a neutron-moderating material, the instrument further including at least one elongate thermal neutron guide located within the outer core and having an inner end that terminates proximal to the neutron detector. In use, the elongate thermal neutron guide channels thermal neutrons towards the neutron detector. Also provided is a method for using said instrument.

L'invention porte sur un instrument de détection d'un rayonnement. L'instrument comporte un noyau interne recevant un détecteur de neutrons et un noyau externe renfermant un matériau de modération de neutrons. L'instrument comporte, en outre, au moins un guide de neutrons thermiques allongé situé à l'intérieur du noyau externe et dont une extrémité interne qui se termine à proximité du détecteur de neutrons. En utilisation, le guide de neutrons thermiques allongé dirige les neutrons thermiques vers le détecteur de neutrons. L'invention porte également sur un procédé d'utilisation de l'instrument.
