Abstract Disclosed are radiation dosimeters and dosimeter badges. The dosimeter badges preferably include first and second parts which are advantageously constructed to join using a securement which produces a sealed area confined within the dosimeter badge. The sealed area is adapted to hold and protect at least one dosimeter mounted therein. The badges are separated into two or more parts to expose the luminescent dosimeters to a stimulating laser beam used to read dose exposure information therefrom. The badges are advantageously shaped to provide unique surface recognition to aid in the automated handling of the badges and badge parts. The badge is adapted to allow automated disassembly and reassembly of badge parts. The engaging badge parts are shaped to allow assembly in a unique relationship. An electronic memory is preferably included to provide calibration and identification information upon the dosimeter for use in reading and interpreting the dose exposure information obtained during reading of the dosimeters. The badges can be worn using a novel badge holder. The badges advantageously include dosimeters mounted in novel dosimeter mounting and frame constructions which reduce thermal heating requirements while protecting the very fine dosimeters. Also disclosed are novel dosimeter constructions using very thin substrates which can be either inorganic or organic materials of a temperature-resistant nature. Such substrates can be provided with polymer binder-phosphor layers bound to the substrates in novel constructions which are low in thermal capacity and resistant to thermal degradation. Further disclosed are methods for producing novel dosimeters utilizing mixtures which can be of phosphor grains and a liquid polymer, or phosphor, polymer and a liquid vehicle. These mixtures are applied to the thin dosimeter substrates using a mask having openings adjacent to the desired dosimeter layer locations.
