TITLE RADIATION PROCESS FOR PREPARATION OF ELECTROPHORESIS GEL MATERIAL ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Describes a porous electrophoretic gel product and a process for controlling the polymerization and cross-linked density of the product which is useful for separation of bioorganic molecules. The gel products afford the desired advantages of being ultra thin and having a high electrophoretic resolution with programmable porosity profiles. The process comprises the steps of: forming a water solution of a mixture of from about 3% weight/volume to about 30% weight/volume of water soluble monomers which can undergo radical initiated polymerization and a cross-linking agent, the cross-linking agent comprising about 0.1% weight/weight to about 10% weight/weight of the total monomer, optionally adding a buffer to maintain pH and detergent, solutes, ampholytes to the solution to maintain uniform electrophoretic migration, forming the solution into the shape of the desired gel product having a uniform atomic composition throughout the volume, subjecting the formed solution to ionizing radiation to polymerize and cross-link the monomer solutions, and regulating the dose of ionizing radiation applied to the monomer solution to vary porosity of the resulting gel product as a function of the length and width of the gel.
