ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides a radiation source for use in smoke detectors. The invention is characterized by a substrate having an electrically-conductive non-radioactive metal surface with a layer of a metal radioactive isotope of the scandium group, together with a non-radioactive bonding metal codeposited on the surface. The bonding metal is selected from Groups VB, VIB, VIIB, VIII, IB, IIB and IVB of the Periodic Table of Elements. The isotope and bonding metal are codeposited on the surface by electroplating the same from an electrolytic solution. The isotope is present in the layer in a minor molar amount as compared to the bonding metal. The invention also relates to a process for providing a radiation source. The improved system of this invention provides electrodeposition at higher levels of activity than previously possible and provides a totally sealed source.
