ABSTRACT A radio communication system comprises a hand held terminal and a base station communicating with the hand held terminal by two-way radio data transmission. The hand held terminal is set with a system ID number by a signal representing the system ID number sent from the base station through radio data transmission. The hand held terminal comprises input means for inputting a code requesting a system ID number of the base station; means for holding the system ID number sent from the base station; and control means for judging the inputted system ID number, constructing system ID number request data, transmitting the request data to the base station, and setting a system ID number transmitted from the base station to the system ID holding means. The base station comprises means for setting the system ID number, and control means for judging the system ID number request data received from the hand held terminal, transmitting the system ID number to the hand held terminal, and controlling communication of the base station with the hand held terminal. This construction avoids special hardware for setting the system ID number, which allows for miniaturization of the hand held terminal. PAT 13879-1
