ABSTRACT A communication system and in particular a radiophone system is described in which the communication between subscribers necessary to set up a call is carried out using a signalling channel reserved for such apparatus, and only after the call has been set up in a speech channel allocated to the call. Speech communication channels are allocated to a call only when a subscriber wishes to use a channel to speak to his correspondent, so that channels are released when not being actively employed in a conversation. The seizure and release of channels is controlled by a press-talk button provided on the radiophone apparatus. Details of the channels allocated when required are transmitted by a separate signalling channel. The two embodiments described in the above paragraphs may be used separately or together.
