Radiopaque polymers have a main chain and a plurality of amide groups which have bound to the amide nitrogen atom thereof an organohalide group that is pendant to the polymer main chain, the organo halide group including one or more iodine and/or bromine atoms thereon. The polymer may be a modified polyamide polymer, copolymer or block copolymer or a modified poly(meth)acrylamide or (meth)acrylamide copolymer or block copolymer. The polymers may be employed in medical devices and are useful for instance to track the movement of a catheter through the body or the inflation of a balloon at a site. The polymers may be made by coupling reactions performed on preexisting amide polymers.

Les polymères radio-opaques selon l'invention ont une chaîne principale et une pluralité de groupes amide comprenant un groupe organo-halogénure lié à un atome d'azote de l'amide de ceux-ci et pendant à la chaîne principale du polymère, un ou plusieurs atomes d'iode et/ou de brome étant situés sur le groupe organo-halogénure. Le polymère peut être un polymère, copolymère ou copolymère à blocs polyamide modifié, ou bien un copolymère ou copolymère à blocs de poly(méth)acrylamide ou (méth)acrylamide modifié. Les polymères peuvent être utilisés dans des dispositifs médicaux et sont utiles par exemple pour suivre le mouvement d'un cathéter dans le corps ou le gonflement d'un ballonnet sur un site. Les polymères peuvent être produits par des réactions de couplage réalisées sur des polymères d'amide préexistants.
