A clip applicator machine (500) is capable of automatically separating individual spring-type rail clips (526) from a stack of clips and applying the individual clips in anchor sockets (536). The clip applicator machine may include two separate workheads (518, 520), each of which is positioned over a respective rail and supports gauge and field side clip applicator assemblies (608). Each applicator assembly (608) is movable from a position to receive clips one at a time from a magazine (640), through a position aligned with the anchor socket (536) of the tie plate. A backstop (640) associated with each clip applicator assembly aligns the workhead longitudinally with respect to the rail and anchor socket and holds the tie plate in position during the clip application process. Preferably, the entire workhead is mounted on a float frame (522) for vertical movement with respect to the rail and for movement both longitudinally and transversely with respect to the rail.
