A method and apparatus for transmitting an information carrying signal, such as an electromagnetic frequency signal or an acoustic signal, through the tracks of a railroad to a remote position on the track where the information is extracted. The extracted information can be used to relate speed and location of trains, location of obstructions, and/or track conditions. The in situ track (10) is evaluated using an autoranging digital multimeter which establishes the resistance between two opposite rails (12, 14).

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de transmettre un signal porteur d'informations, tel qu'un signal de fréquence électromagnétique ou un signal acoustique, par les voies ferrées d'un chemin de fer à une position distante située sur la voie ferrée où les informations sont extraites. Ces informations peuvent être utilisées afin de rendre compte de la vitesse et de l'emplacement des trains, de l'emplacement d'obstructions et/ou des états de la voie. La voie ferrée in situ (10) est évaluée au moyen d'un multimètre numérique à auto-télémétrie qui établit la résistance entre deux rails opposés (12, 14).
