The disclosed invention is a rail cover (1) for use on mounting rails typically, though not exclusively, used on personal firearms. The covers may be made to fit either Picatinny or Weaver type rails and feature a clipping structure (4) on the cover's underside that grasps the rail while the tension in the cover body (2) holds the cover in place. Two preferred embodiments disclose a solid cover (50) and a low profile, ribbed cover that nests within transverse grooves in some rails. The low profile cover has at least one friction ridge (52) provided along each edge to aid in removal of the cover. Alternatively, a restraining beam (70) may be utilized to further restrain the clipping structure and retain the cover on the rail.
