ABSTRACT A rail fastening system for securing rails 6 to rail ties in which an elastic fastener 8 is used. The fastener 8 has one portion 12 which lies on the rail flange 7 and a second portion 9 which seats within a support secured to the rail tie. The fastener comprises a base portion 9 which seats within the support and two tapered arms 11 which are curved over the base so that the free ends 12 of the tapered arms lie on the rail flange 7. The support 22 is located adjacent the rail flange and a locking element 14 fits between the rail flange and the support 22 and is shaped to interfit with the support 22 in a wedge-like relationship such that longitudinal rail movement acting on the locking element 14 is translated into a lateral force to prevent longitud- inal rail movement. 1A.
