ABSTRACT An improved rail insulator is designed to be protected against erosion and wear particularly in track situations where water and sand contribute to abrasion. The rail insulator comprises two parts, one lying on the rail flange and the post portion lying between the rail flange and the rail clamp support shoulder. The post portion incorporates an elastic sealing member to prevent ingress of abrasive material to reduce wear of the insulator post and the support shoulder. The sealing layer can cover the whole face of the post or simply provide a line seal at the upper point of contact between the insulator post andthe clamp support shoulder.
