ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rail gap switch for use in a system which is pulse charged above the d.c. breakdown voltage of a fluid dielectric medium, but below the pulsed breakdown. The rail gap switch has a pair of electrically conductive parallel rails positioned in the dielectric medium that define a pair of high voltage electrodes. The dielectric medium can be subjected to volumetric ionization between the high voltage electrodes.
