A rail road car such as a double tub coal gondola car has a center sill that is narrow in the middle between the two tubs, and wider at the draft arms. The center sill has a transition section that provides a smooth, gradual transition between the respective bottom flange portions of the two without sharp changes in direction in the stress fields in tension and compression, and with little or no out of plane eccentricities in load path, and with a tendency to minimize or avoid local stress concentrations. The center sill includes a set of access apertures and corresponding bridges or ties that maintain the lateral halves of the center sill flange main portion in appropriate relationship to each other with respect to resistance to buckling. The tubs fasten mechanically to the sides of the center sill.

L'invention concerne un wagon de chemin de fer, tel qu'un wagon-tombereau à double caisse pour le transport de charbon, doté d'une traverse centrale qui est étroite au milieu, entre les deux caisses, et plus large au niveau des bras de traction. La traverse centrale est dotée d'une section de transition assurant une transition régulière et progressive entre les parties de brides inférieures respectives des deux éléments sans variation brutale de direction des champs de contraintes en traction et en compression, avec peu ou absence d'excentricités hors plan du chemin de chargement, et avec une tendance à minimiser ou à éviter les concentrations locales de contraintes. La traverse centrale comprend un ensemble d'orifices d'accès et de ponts ou attachements correspondants qui maintiennent les moitiés latérales de la partie de bride principale de la traverse centrale en liaison appropriée l'une avec l'autre en termes de résistance au flambage. Les caisses se fixent mécaniquement aux côtés de la traverse centrale.
