A RAILROAD CAR RETARDER ARRANGEMENT HAVING WHEEL DISENGAGEMENT GAPS FOR REDUCING THE PRODUCTION OF WHEEL SQUEALING NOISES Abstract of the Disclosure This disclosure relates to railway braking apparatus having a plurality of operating units for moving elongated braking bars to a closed braking position. The elongated braking bars include a series of brake beams and brake shoes for frictionally engaging the wheel of a railway vehicle. The brake beams and brake shoes are provided with breaks or gaps for selectively disengaging the wheels of a passing vehicle for reducing the production of wheel squealing noises.
