ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Wooden railroad ties of rectangular cross section about nine inches wide at the top and seven inches thick have many holes drilled vertically through them from the top surface to the bottom surface to inhibit extension of cracks. The tie is divided into two end sections, two rail securing sections and a center section. A connecting plate having a central planar section on which the webs of rails rest and two end sections is spiked to the tie over each rail securing section, the shanks of the spikes being driven through outer and inner holes in the end sections. The spikes whose shanks are driven through said inner holes have outwardly extending heads which engage the webs on the bottoms of the rails and fasten the rails securely against the connecting plates and to the ties. The holes drilled in one end of the ties are arranged in different patterns in each section as follows: two longitudinal rows of four holes each in the end sections equally spaced from each other, from the sides and ends of the tie; nine holes located on the arms of an X in the section to which a connecting plate is spiked but in none the which the shanks of spikes enter; two longitudinally spaced sets of five holes each located on the arms of an X in the portion of the center section adjacent to the rail securing section; the holes drilled in the other end of the tie are a mirror image of the described holes; and one pair of holes at the center of each tie about which the tie is symmetrical.
