-16- ABSTRACT A railway braking system includes a hand-brake system and a service brake system, in which the hand-brake system is interlocked with the service brake system such that when the hand-brake system is applied the service brake system is rendered incapable of full brake release and is rendered incapable of being re- charged until the hand-brake system has been released. In a particular embodiment (Figure 1) the interlock is mechanically effected via valve-operating gear (13) of the hand-brake system acting on a fluid-control valve (12) of the service brake system. First, second and third ports (14,15,16) of the valve (12) are respectively connected to an air reservoir (3), atmosphere and the remainder of the service brake system. In the hand-brake system released condition the third port (16) is connected to the second port (15) open to atmosphere and the service brake system is unaffected by the hand-brake system. Application of the hand-brake system connects the third port (16) to the first port (14) and hence to the air reservoir (3) to bring about and/or maintain brake application.
