17 RAILWAY CAR CONVERSION METHOD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method for quickly and economically converting railway freight cars having bottom dump hopper chutes into rotary-dump gondola cars that are unloaded by rotary car dumpers. The conversion method includes the operative steps of removing the existing hopper chutes and discharge doors and hinges from the bottom-dump hopper car, forming tub assemblies, each having a curved bottom plate and two vertical side plates, and installing the tub assemblies to the underside of the freight car to close the openings in the car floor resulting from removal of the hopper chutes. The conversion method does not increase the cargo volume of the car over its rated tonnage capacity, and the converted car conforms to dimensional restrictions applicable to rotary-dump gondola cars.
