RAILWAY CAR TRUCK Gerald D. Garner Florissant, Missouri James C. Hammonds St. Charles, Missouri Jan D. Holt St. Charles, Missouri Conway H. Melcher Kirkwood, Missouri Abstract of the Disclosure In accordance with the present invention a railway car truck is provided having a transom which is integrally affixed to spaced side frames to define an integral H frame truck to avoid hunting at usual U. S. freight train speeds. The transom has cross section which provides torsional flexi- bility. Above the transom a bolster is provided which also ex- tends transversely between the side frames. The bolster is pro- vided with a cross section, which is inexpensive, and prefer- ably the shear center is spaced from the neutral axis of the cross section. A connection is provided between the vehicle body and the bolster which preferably is spaced from the neu- tral axis of the bolster to avoid torsional loads being intro- duced into the bolster as a result of longitudinal loads trans- ferred between the car body and the bolster. A spring assembly is provided between the bolster and the side frames, preferably of a non-linear type in which one component has a resultant low spring rate and another component has a resultant high spring rate. In one embodiment the weight of the vehicle body is taken at about the midpoint of the side frames above the spring assembly on a car body hearing assembly, the upper surface of which is provided with a low friction material, allowing the truck to rotate with respect to the car body. In another em- bodiment the car body bearing assembly is located between the side frames and the center plate. The side frames are pref- erably provided with an elastomeric journal pad above the area where the side frames rock upon the journal bearing. The spring assembly is preferably provided with dampening devices to damp oscillation of the spring assembly. The present invention fur- ther comprises the side frames, bolster, transom, resilient assemblies and car body bearing assemblies which are used in the truck.
