ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A railway car coupler comprising a head including a throat portion, a knuckle pivoted to the head at one side of the head's longitudinal vertical centerplane, a lower shelf extending from the head from below the knuckle, the lower shelf extending from an intersection with the throat to a point substantially adjacent the pivot of the knuckle, the lower shelf having a front surface and a side surface, the side surface having a chamfer extending downwardly and away from the guard arm side of the coupler head.
