ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A flat car hand brake system in which a vertical wheel, high powered hand brake is positioned horizontally below the deck to provide load clearance. An adjustable chain takeup system moves the idle portion of the brake chain at exactly the same rate a the loaded or pulled portion of the chain to prevent any slack which would cause fouling.
