This invention is an improvement on safety afforded by derails to prevent or reduce damage from runaway railcars. The improvement includes the use of a spring switch mechanism and pair of switch points along with a frog with the points set in the direction of the approach of a suspected runaway, be it from gravity, mechanical effort from work crews or wind. The points are set to direct a railcar movement away from the main line or the dangerous situation, even when the signal is set to permit entrance to the trackage with the derail set.
