ABSTRACT A railway work machine has a railway track displacement tool for correcting levelling or alignment defects of the railway track, a regulating member for adjusting the displacement of the tool, and a device for detecting the geometrical defects of the track and controlling said regulating member. The detection device comprises rail feelers spaced apart from each other and to which there are connected a light-ray emitter, a screen having two parallel delimiting edges, and a receiver having two identical photovoltaic cells arranged in such a manner that the sum (u + d) of their irradiated surfaces is a constant and the difference (u - d) thereof is proportional to the amplitude of the detected defects. The signals emitted by the two cells are directed to a processing circuit outputting an end signal used as a control signal for said regulating member, which end signal is representative of the quotient Image whereby this end signal is exclusively proportional to the difference of the irradiated surfaces of the two cells and may be used as an indication of the actual amplitude of the detected defects.
