ABSTRACT A back support apparatus for use with a mattress on a bed is disclosed. The back support has an actuating assembly positionable outside the mattress on opposite sides thereof, and a generally planar back support pivotally connected to the actuating assembly, positionable against the upper surface of the mattress and running from the area of the actuating assembly to the area of the head of the bed, and rotatable from the actuating assembly about a lateral axis to at least one position where the back support means is angled upwardly from the mattress to act as a back support. A jack or ratcheting strap mechanism or other suitable arrangement is provided for rotating the back support. The mechanism on one side of the mattress is preferably linked to the mechanism on the other side of the mattress via a torque tube, so that both sides of the back support are raised or lowered simultaneously.
