ABSTRACT Apparatus for elevating the upper body portion of a mattress is disclosed. The apparatus has a base frame assembly positionable outside the mattress on opposite sides thereof in the area of the upper body portion of the mattress at substantially the height of the bottom of the mattress. A planar back support means is positionable against the upper surface of the upper body portion of the mattress, pivotally connected at opposite ends of one edge to the base frame assembly at opposite sides of the mattress at points corresponding generally to the division between the upper body and lower body portions of the mattress, for rotation about a lateral axis upwardly from a horizontal position. Means are provided for supporting and locking the back support means above the base frame assembly. Preferably, the supporting and locking means is adapted to support and lock the back support means at a number of possible positions.
