A cold-formed, raised-center axle (10) for a heavy-duty vehicle includes a central tube (12) having a pair of ends, (14) a pair of spindles (18) attached to the central tube ends, (14) and a wall thickness of from about 0.500 to about 0.625 inches. A hump is formed in the center portion of the tube (12) and includes compressive residual stresses in its bottom portion when the axle is in an in-service position. A method for forming the raised-center axle (10) includes the steps of providing a substantially straight axle, (10) inserting the axle into a press, over-forming a hump in the axle in the direction such that camber is induced in the axle, and forming the axle in a second direction, thereby substantially removing the camber and replacing a detrimental residual stress state in the humped portion of the axle (10) with a beneficial residual stress state.

L'invention concerne un essieu central à bosse et formé à froid destiné à un véhicule utilitaire lourd et comprenant un tube central ayant une paire d'extrémités, une paire de broches attachées aux extrémités du tube central et une épaisseur de paroi comprise environ entre 0,500 à 0,625 pouces environ. Une bosse est formée dans partie centrale du tube et comporte des contraintes résiduelles de compression dans sa partie inférieure lorsque l'essieu est en position de service. Un procédé permettant de former l'essieu central à bosse consiste à prendre un essieu sensiblement droit ; à insérer l'essieu dans une presse ; à former une bosse dans l'essieu dans une direction de manière à induire une cambrure dans l'essieu et à former l'essieu dans une deuxième direction, ce qui permet d'enlever sensiblement la cambrure et de remplacer un état de contrainte résiduelle nuisible dans la partie à bosse de l'essieu par un état de contrainte résiduelle bénéfique.
