- 1 - Abstract A ram block carrier for a reciprocating ram-type blowout preventer is described. It comprises a base portion adapted for connection to a reciprocating drive means; and a pair of arms extending from said base por- tion and defining a recess, opening generally laterally away from the situs of said drive means, for partially peripherally surrounding such ram block, said recess further opening both upwardly and downwardly throughout generally the full lateral depth of said recess, said arms being adapted to receive a shear ram seal actuator element for extending transversely between the free ends of said arms, and said arms forming laterally facing backing surfaces for backing such actuator element.
