ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A practice projectile is described which comprises a tubular body having a closed downstream end and an open upstream end. A nose cap closes the open upstream end and is secured to the tubular body. Driving means are provided on the exterior of the projectile to impart spin to the same upon launching. According to a particular feature of this invention, stress raising means are provided in the tubular body. These stress raising means operate to increase tensile stresses in the tubular body to a predetermined value which, upon impact of the projectile with a target or the ground, causes total stresses in said body to exceed a designed maximum value. Those excess stresses cause break-up or frag- mentation of the projectile. The stress raising means in some instances are tubular boreholes extending axially in the tubular body, and spaced symmetrically to maintain mass symmetry, thus resulting in stability in free flight. In more preferred forms the stress raising means are axial grooves in at least one of the inner and outer surfaces of the tubular body. MR/
