A training projectile (10) that utilizes flutes (120) or flats (220) to augment roll damping characteristics and thereby cause the projectile to crossover into a gyroscopically unstable trajectory pattern at a predetermined time. Prior to the crossover, the training projectile maintains a gyroscopically stable trajectory while enables extrapolation to ascertain the trajectory of a non-training projectile that does not have an augmented roll damping section (100). The unstable trajectory pattern substantially reduces the distance the training projectile (10) can traverse, thereby reducing the amount of area required for a training range.

Ce projectile d'entraînement (10) comporte des ailettes (120) ou des méplats (220) destinés lui conférer une plus grande aptitude à l'amortissement en roulis, et partant à faire subir au projectile à une transition l'amenant, à un instant défini, à adopter un tracé de trajectoire gyroscopiquement instable. Jusqu'à la transition, le projectile conserve une trajectoire gyroscopiquement stable à partir de laquelle on peut, par extrapolation, déduire avec certitude la trajectoire que prendrait un même projectile, en version normale, c'est-à-dire sans accroissement de la zone d'amortissement du roulis (100). Le tracé de trajectoire instable réduit sensiblement la distance franchissable par le projectile (10), réduisant d'autant la surface nécessaire correspondant à la distance de tir.
