Methods and apparatus for battery charging provide a charging cycle in which charging periods alternate with discharging periods. During the charging periods a lead acid battery is charged at a rate of about 0.55CEC amperes to about 0.65CEC, where C is the battery capacity in ampere hours. The charging periods have durations of about 60 to 180 seconds. During the discharging periods the battery is discharged at a rate in the range of about 0.05(EC to about 0.07CEC. The discharge periods have durations of about 10 to 20 seconds. By introducing discharging periods while charging the battery, the battery's internal resistance is deceased and less heat is generated during charging. The charging time is about 1- 2.5 hours for lead-acid batteries.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif de chargement de batterie présentant un cycle de chargement au cours duquel des phases de charge et de décharge sont alternées. Durant les phases de charge, une batterie au plomb est chargée à un taux situé entre 0,55OEC Ampères et 0,65OEC Ampères, C étant la capacité de la batterie en ampères-heures. Les phases de charge durent entre 60 et 180 secondes. Durant les phases de décharge, la batterie est déchargée à un taux situé entre 0,05OEC et 0,07OEC. Les phases de décharge durent entre 10 et 20 secondes. L'intégration de phases de décharge au chargement de la batterie permet d'abaisser la résistance interne de la batterie, et de réduire la production de chaleur durant le chargement. La durée de chargement est d'environ 1 heure à 2 heures â pour des batteries au plomb.
