X-8573 Abstract of the Invention The present invention provides a method for the detection of methicillin-resistant staphylococci using the polymerase chain reaction. The reaction detects the presence of the mecA gene, which encodes penicillin binding protein 2A. Also provided is a method for the rapid release of DNA from staphylococci. The two methods can be used in combination for a rapid and sensitive route to the detection of these dangerous pathogens.
