A mixture of beads of uniform size is deposited in an array by establishing discrete alignment areas each consisting of a droplet of adhesive or small area of continuous adhesive layer exposed through an aperture in a mask. Beads which are trapped by the attachment areas are released by either a solvent on a vacuum manifold, or by evaporation of the adhesive, preferably by means of a vacuum centrifuge. The beads are released into capillaries, in which cleavage of attached compounds, or synthesis of new compounds, can be carried out. An apparatus used for carrying out the invention is shown in the figure, which comprises a mask (10) with side walls, an adhesive-coated film (12), a capillary array (16), a gasket (17), and a chemically resistant well plate (18).

On dépose un mélange de billes de taille uniforme sous forme de réseau en créant des zones discrètes d'alignement dont chacune consiste en une goutte d'adhésif ou en une petite partie d'une couche adhésive continue, exposée à travers une ouverture dans un masque. On libère les billes captées par les zones de liaison soit au moyen d'un solvant dans un collecteur à vide, soit par évaporation de l'adhésif, effectuée de préférence au moyen d'une centrifugeuse à vide. Les billes sont relâchées dans des capillaires, où l'on peut procéder à la segmentation des composés liés ou à la synthèse de nouveaux composés. La figure 1 montre un appareil conçu pour mener à bien l'opération: il comprend un masque (10) avec des parois latérales, un film (12) recouvert d'un adhésif, un réseau capillaire (16), un joint d'étanchéité (17) et une plaque à cupules (18) résistant aux substances chimiques.
