L'invention a trait à un trifluorure de terre rare à nouvelles caractéristiques morphologiques, lequel est notamment utilisable dans le domaine de la métallurgie et de la lubrification. Elle concerne également un procédé d'obtention de ce fluorure, selon lequel on fait réagir une solution aqueuse de sel de terre rare avec une solution de fluorure d'ammonium, on sépare le précipité formé et on le soumet à un traitement thermique. Le fluorure de terre rare ainsi obtenu présente une répartition granulométrique fine et monodisperse.
