ABSTRACT There is disclosed a ratchet assembly for selec- tively transmitting relative longitudinal movement between a first to a second element of a downhole tool. The assembly comprises a slot associated with one of these elements; a ball seat associated with the other element; a ball received in the ball seat and extending into the slot; and a swivel adapted to permit substantially unimpeded lateral movement of said ball in the slot.
