ABSTRACT A freezer hinge assembly of the type including a housing for external mounting on a top opening chest type freezer and a tension spring for counterbalancing the weight of the lid, is described. The tension in the spring is adjusted from the side of the housing which is provided with a longitudinal slot at least one side edge of which is provided with a plurality of spaced, downwardly facing ledges or slots for selective engage- ment, either directly or indirectly, with the tension spring. In a preferred embodiment the spring engages a lever intermediate a pivot point therefor on one side of the housing and an offset at the other end thereof which selectively engages a sawtooth edge of the longitudinal slot.
