A rate adaptive pacer designed to accommodate changes in a patient's metabolic demand utilizes ventricular ejection fraction (EF) as the rate controlling parameter. Ejection fraction is measured by sensing intracardiac impedance at end-diastole and end-systole and then using these measurements to compute stroke volume (SV). Ejection fraction is the stroke volume divided by the end-diastolic volume. This calculated value of EF is processed by the pacemaker to determine the escape interval (pacing rate) through a simple conversion algorithm.

Un stimulateur adaptant le rythme cardiaque, conçu pour se conformer aux changements des exigences métaboliques d'un patient, utilise la fraction d'éjection (FE) ventriculaire comme paramètre contrôlant le rythme. Les fractions d'éjection sont mesurées en captant l'impédance intracardiaque en fin de diastole et en fin de systole, puis le stimulateur se sert de ces mesures pour calculer le volume systolique (VS). La fraction d'éjection représente le volume systolique divisé par le volume en fin de diastole. Cette valeur calculée de FE est traitée par le stimulateur cardiaque pour déterminer l'intervalle d'échappement (fréquence de stimulation) au moyen d'un simple algorithme de conversion.
