ABSTRACT A method and apparatus is provided for monitoring the rate of change of a signal. This is achieved by periodically sampling a first signal and generating a reference signal which for each period of sampling is off-set from the first signal by a predetermined amount to form the step-signal. The first signal and step- signal are compared and if their amplitudes are the same an output signal is generated. This means that if the first signal changes by a rate in excess of a predetermined rate the output signal is produced. The method and apparatus thus respond to a predetermined rate of change although the values of the signals vary generally over a period of time. A particular applica- tion is smoke detection where gradually changes of atmosphere are ignored but a rapid rate of change is detected and the output (an alarm) signal is generated.
