A method of determining a z-buffer for a voxel data set, comprising first raycasting at least a first ray to determine a value for a first z-buffer element; and second raycasting at least a second ray to determine a value for a second z-buffer element, where said z-buffer element values are determined at different accuracies, which different accuracies are responsive to characteristics of the data set at a neighborhood of said rays. Preferably, said different accuracies are achieved by modifying the accuracy of determination of an intersection between a cast ray and a solid voxel of said data set. Alternatively or additionally, said different accuracies are achieved by modifying the density of raycasting into the z-buffer.
L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de déterminer un tampon de profondeur pour un ensemble de données voxel, lequel procédé consiste tout d'abord à lancer au moins un premier rayon afin de déterminer une valeur destinée à un premier élément tampon de profondeur; puis à lancer au moins un second rayon afin de déterminer une valeur destinée à un second élément tampon de profondeur, lesquelles valeurs de l'élément tampon de profondeur sont déterminées avec différents degrés de précision, ces différents degrés de précision étant représentatifs des caractéristiques des ensembles de données à proximité desdits rayons. De préférence, on obtient les différents degrés de précision en modifiant la précision de la détermination d'une intersection entre un rayon lancé et un voxel solide de cet ensemble de données. Selon un autre mode de réalisation ou un mode de réalisation supplémentaire, ces différents degrés de précision sont obtenus par modification de l'intensité du lancer de rayon dans le tampon de profondeur.
