ABSTRACT A process for preparing starch-containing rayon fibers by forming a slurry of starch granules in an aqueous medium, adding an aqueous solution of a starch chain-splitting agent thereto, adding sodium hydroxide to produce an aqueous alka- line solution of the starch and agent, blending the alkaline solution with viscose and extruding the starch-containing vis- cose thus obtained to form starch-containing rayon fibers. These fibers have improved fluid holding capacity and are use- ful in making fabrics or material where fluid capacity is an important requisite. The use of higher starch concentrations allows a reduction in the amount of dissolved cellulose pulp used in the production of these rayon fibers and thus provides a more economical process for the production of such fibers.
