ABSTRACT A reactor for a coal gasification process in which under partial oxidation of solid material containing carbon in the presence of water a car- bon monoxide and a synthesis-gas containing hydrogen are produced. The inven- tion is characterized by a vortex burner which preferably has a conduit ad- mitting the solid material without spiralling up to its encounter with combus- tive air or oxygen.
