ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A disposable reaction container composed of rigid or semi-rigid material which comprises, preferably in one piece, spaced apart side walls of substantial lateral extent, a bottom wall and two end walls, there being two chambers in the container separated from each other by dividing means that is contiguous with said side walls and that is impervious except for a passage of restricted cross sections through said dividing means in the lower portion of the container and at least one of said chambers having windows therein adapted and arranged for the transmission of light therethrough and through a body of given thickness of liquid between said windows. The chamber is accessible from the top for respectively receiving aqueous liquid and at least a portion of the passage between the chambers is located sub- stantially above the bottoms of the respective chambers so as thereby to form pockets into which the aqueous liquid may be received into each chamber and lyophilized without becoming commingled with liquid in the other chamber when the reaction container is in upright position. Preferably the portion of the passage that is above the bottom of each chamber is above the openings of the passage respectively into each chamber with at least one and preferably both of said openings adjacent the chamber bottom. In one embodiment the configuration of the passage is defined by a portion of the dividing means that is up- standing from the bottom wall in combination with an upper portion. A method is disclosed whereby the aqueous liquids in each chamber are kept separated from each other by a body of air entrapped in the passage between the two chambers and aqueous solutions are introduced into each chamber, lyophilized and reconstituted with water prior to forcing solution from one of the chambers through the passage into the other chamber.
