An externally heated reaction injection molding ("RIM") system and processes for producing polyurethane articles. The system comprises a mixing chamber for combining a prepolymer and a chain extender and one or more heating systems for heating at least one of the prepolymer and the chain extender upstream of the mixing chamber. In one embodiment, the process comprises injecting a heated prepolymer and/or a heated chain extender into a mixing chamber and initiating a curing of the pre-poiyrner in a mixing chamber. By employing heat to decrease the viscosity of the prepolymer and/or the chain extender, prepoly-mers and/or chain extenders that have high room temperature viscosities or are in the solid state at room temperature, may be uti-lized in the RlM system.
Système de moulage par injection et réaction (RIM) à chauffage externe et procédés permettant de fabriquer des articles en polyuréthane. Ledit système comprend une chambre de mélange destinée à mélanger un prépolymère et un extendeur de chaîne, ainsi quun ou plusieurs systèmes chauffants conçus pour chauffer ledit prépolymère et/ou ledit extendeur de chaîne en amont de cette chambre de mélange. Dans un mode de réalisation, le procédé consiste à injecter un prépolymère chauffé et/ou un extendeur de chaîne chauffé dans une chambre de mélange, et à commencer le durcissement dudit prépolymère dans la chambre de mélange. La chaleur réduit la viscosité des prépolymères et des extendeurs de chaîne, ce qui permet demployer dans le système RIM des prépolymères et/ou des extendeurs de chaîne qui ont une viscosité élevée à température ambiante ou qui se trouvent à létat solide à température ambiante.
