ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a reaction vessel which is used to carry out an exothermic reaction of a mixed gas consisting of a plurality of elements in the presence of a solid catalyst. In a conventional reaction vessel of this type, it is difficult to maintain an optimum temperature of the exothermic reaction, and its economy is poor. The present invention is directed to the reaction vessel in which central pipes are disposed in a plurality of reaction pipes and circular spaces between these pipes are packed with a catalyst, whereby an unreacted feed gas can be caused to flow upward from lower positions of the central pipes and can be then mixed with another unreacted feed gas having a lower temperature, and the resultant mixed gas can be caused to flow through the catalyst layers downward from above. The present invention permits accomplishing the exothermic reaction while maintaining the optimum temperature by virtue of the above-mentioned constitution, and is ecomonical. The present invention can be applied to reaction vessels by which the exothermic reaction is carried out for the mixed gas consisting of a plurality of elements, as in the synthesis of methanol.
