A reactive power compensation apparatus in which a reactor is connected in series with anti-parallel- connected thyristors, and a forward voltage signal applied to the thyristors and a thyristor on period signal set by a phase control signal are ANDed to pro- duce a firing pulse, so that a current flowing through the reactor is controlled. The apparatus is provided with a first circuit for detecting that a reverse voltage has been applied to a conducting thyristor for a predetermined period of time after the termination of conduction thereof, a second circuit for detecting that, after the application of a firing pulse to a nonconducting thyristor, the conduction state thereof has continued for a predetermined time more than its turn-off time, and a third circuit for resetting the on period signal of the conducting thyristor with the output of either the first circuit or second circuit.
